again and again

"As a single footstep will not make a path on the earth, so a single thought will not make a pathway in the mind. To make a deep physical path, we walk again and again. To make a deep mental path, we must think over and over the kind of thoughts we wish to dominate our lives."

~Henry David Thoreau

I used to be a victim of my thoughts. I used to think incredibly negative thoughts and was usually surprised when anything good happened. Then one day, a dear friend, woke me up. She said, “You know, you can always change the channel.”

I’ve learned over the years, that not only can I change the channel, but I get to control the programming too. I can pick the script, the actors, and the plot. If I don’t like the way things are going, I can make choices to change the story line. I can change the people I choose to spend my time with. I can change the set. I can change the words that I use.

And Thoreau is right…it is important to rehearse.

When I hear Thoreau’s words in this quote, I think of manifestation. We all have the power to see what we want in our lives, as well as, to create what we want to see. Last week, in this space, we spoke about the miracles that are all around us all the time, whether we are aware of them in any given moment or not. As we think about who we are and the life that we have, it becomes just that. It can be hard, and a bit overwhelming, to try to think "good" thoughts all the time. However, I feel that we are all on a path of finding our way, which takes time and nurturing. With some patience and a little bit of mental rewiring, we can thread the good throughout our everyday lives. By realizing and accepting this power we all have over our lives, we will attract the life that we wish to live, which actually and ironically, is right here before our eyes.

  4. I just love Thoreau...such a brilliant man! He is so right! We live our life much like this, turning our thoughts into reality by constantly thinking them. I have a ritual in the shower where I think about the things I am thankful for and think about all the things I want to happen that day or week or month. Such a great way to live!
    Thanks again Mamas!

  5. So very true! I feel that the energy a person sends out into the universe always comes back to them..good or bad. It is up to each individual to decide what type of energy they wish to receive. Have a great week!

  7. Three times in three days a Thoreau quote has seemingly suddenly appeared before me! It is making me very happy. And the words from both of you are making me very happy. It is so true, what we choose to focus our attention on, whether we choose a truly good thought, this is all so important! (My mom tells me this good stuff all the time too.)

  8. Hi elizabeth and lisa. I just love this Thoreau quote. In the last year I've realized that I have a complete array of how I not only think of things but of how I choose to react to things. It's amazing to see the nature of something change just because I shifted my perception and chose differently. Since adopting, "you are what you think", I've seen incredible postitive changes in my life which have led to some incredible creative endeavors. Thanks for the thoughts today. They are beautiful as usual.

  11. I think you're right, Lisa; There's a lot we can change in our lives just by changing our thoughts....(although in some cases it is very hard...or...am i just "thinking" that...)
    Thank you for the light!

  16. Elizabeth, I so share the same story of only thinking the negative. It has taken a lot of time, and a lot of years, but thinking in the positive and choosing the life that I want, and the happiness that I bring in has finally made it's way into my daily life.

Thank you both for your beautiful words, they are just what I needed today
